INTERVIEW: SINCE TORINO

•  How would you best describe your sound?

Warm and analogue are the vibe we tend to strive for. We pull a lot from midwest emo and tentpole alternative bands like Pavement, Yo La Tengo and The National in terms of songwriting and style, probably with some slowcore elements too.

•  What is the theme behind the EP? Has there been any particular influences that have helped in its creation?

I guess the main themes are probably how to be a person and be with other people. There’s this thematic through line in the songs about a reunion, which worked because our songs have always had a lot of characters in them, so it felt very natural to have them all together again, and that let us explore how your relationships change with time.

In terms of influences for the lyrics, Killing Commendatore by Murakami and Intermezzo by Sally Rooney were both on my mind while I was writing and re-writing the songs.

•  Was there anyone that helped create/produce the EP?

This is actually the first body of work we’ve done fully produced ourselves – Alex, our drummer, mixed and mastered it and did an amazing job.

In terms of collaborators, our friend Eamonn from the band pale sailor jammed with us a few times for our headline show and wrote some great riffs for truth and oh, angelo and some of our previous collaborators Alun and Rob played violin and trumpet respectively.

Also, our friend Max played the flute for the first time, and Paul Savage who runs the practice space we use helped us with drum recording and let us use his nice microphones for recording guitars and bass.

•  How was the artwork created and decided on?

It was a picture from a birthday party Alex attended (taken by Victoria Lee – @vicoriart) which we thought gelled nicely with the theme of a reunion dinner. It also looked super warm and a bit hazy, and the colours seem to fit with the sound very nicely.

•  What upcoming bands are you listening to at the moment?

There are some great bands in Sheffield at the moment: Pale Sailor, Jumper Boy, Student Slasher Film and Blue John are all good friends of ours, and then Rhiannon Hope is doing some really cool folky stuff in Leeds
