INTERVIEW: SISTERLY

What was the inspiration behind the song? It almost has a grunge/garage vibe to it compared  to your other releases, were there any bands in particular you’ve been listening to?

We wanted to write a simple straight up grunge influenced tune. Our guitarist Dan had a  skeleton of a song already with a basic chord structure, but it had a much more fast pop punk energy to it. Ed listened to it in some pubs in York on some headphones and wrote down some  lyrics that seemed to suit it a bit and that’s where the first verse came from. The lead riff was  brought up later in a rehearsal, that’s when it was decided we should slow it down so it could  fuse better with Ed’s lyrics. So, we moved away from a Greenday/Foo Fighters song and went  more Fiddlehead, Pixies, Primus, and Joyce Manor.

Who did you work with on production/mixing/mastering?

Production and mixing for our songs have always been Lewis Mitchell, who we can comfortably  say is a 5th member of the band. Track by track, the process has been getting better and better,  we bring the main structure to his studio and his input really adds that creative flair to it, while  also making the tunes sound MASSIVE.

For mastering, we always like to get a second pair of ears in to give it that extra polish before its  release. With this single bringing a heavier approach to SISTERLY, Alfie wanted to bring in Ieuan  from Artio. The dude is a genius when it comes to production, and he really elevated the tune and gave it at proper “umph” with such a damn quick turnover. We were so gassed when we  got to hear it back.

Did their involvement shape the track in any way?

We would say compared to our EP ‘Flowermound’ we were actually a lot more direct with the  writing and recording of the tune. But Lewis is always full of ideas, with the shift in direction, he  experimented with us loads in various plug ins and switching up the tone. He did an ace job on bringing out the heavy in Ed and Dans riffs and really giving the track a proper drive to it and a  solid resemblance to how we play live.

Recording vocals always makes some funny memories for us, Lewis loves layering it up and  adding these incredible harmonies. Waste Away in particular brought the idea of ‘Metal as  F*ck’ scream Ad-lips from Dan, that we now have started to integrate into the live version and  the outro to the tune saw us bring back more gang vocals which helps get our audience more  encouraged to belt it out too. All in all, we owe a tremendous amount to Lewis and Ieuan and  they will most certainly be back for production if they can tolerate us some more.

What was the inspiration behind the artwork and how was it created?

After a trip to a mates wedding in New York, Justine (Ed’s wonderful girlfriend and essentially our tour manager now) took this picture on the subway of Ed’s wrist. It stuck around for ages as  we digged it so much. When Waste Away came about, we all knew we had to use it. In the past,  there is always a lot of trials and errors when it comes to artwork, and us lads pestering Cole  into making millions of different designs. But with this picture it just stuck and after a workup in  photoshop, making it pop with some tasty colour, and a bit of a fanzine theme, it all came  together.

Have you got any gigs planned surrounding the release?

We recently just played Lending Room supporting Gloria, which was ace and a cool full circle  moment for us as it was where our first ever gig and headline show was. Coming up we’ve got a  Halloween Special at Beyond the Red Door in Horsforth (Expect some ridiculous fancy dress).  And we’re supporting Wedgy at Headrow House on the 28th of November, which we’re buzzing  for as a new venue to tick off the list.

What can we expect to see next from Sisterly?

That is strong question that I don’t think us boys even know to full extent! There is a fair few  songs floating in and out of practice, that we’re confident will emerge in 2026. But they have  been temporarily put on hold while we curate the upcoming shows and make sure it all sounds  tight. We’re putting in the graft to make sure some exciting shows are lined-up in the coming  months, especially next summer. So stay tuned to our socials!

What Leeds bands are you listening to at the moment?

Leeds has got such a solid scene of local bands currently, A band we played with recently called  Fake Fame really took us by surprise, their image doesn’t hold them so seriously on stage(on a  good way), but when they started playing, every member had so much talent and the lead  singer had some incredible vocals on him. Some honourable mentions are Part-Time Model with really creative song structures and are so impressively tight as a 5-piece on stage. A  favourite thing to do when we headline is pick our support slots, How Dare You and Meliss  shared the stage with us at our EP launch and are both a must watch. And of course, Mince,  who just brought out their debut album ‘Paid to Leave’ which is so worth a listen.
