INTERVIEW: WEDGY

We spoke to Wedgy ahead of their debut EP release, Headrow house headline show and start to 2026.

– Were there any artists in particular you’ve been listening to that have influenced you?

Not directly no – I’d say the influence on the song writing comes from loving bands that create a wall of sound live with lots of layers. It’s something we aim to achieve and I think this directs the song writing method. The tracks actually ended up being recorded as we would play them live to keep that feeling.

– Who did you work with on production/mixing/mastering? Did their involvement shape the tracks in any way?

We worked with our friend Jesse in Meanwood. Is an experienced engineer and has seen us play live quite a few times now which is important for us when choosing who would get to produce the EP. We knew we wanted to keep the live sound as part of the recorded project and Jesse’s achieved that well. Also, because we are close to him, it allowed us to be part of the production side since the songs stemmed from demos Will produced at home.

He’s also definitely had some influence on some of the songs when we’ve been recording the guitar and synth parts. Ones that stick out are a slight synth chord change in the realm which really gave it that gloomy edge. Also on Route to Paraty, which is an instrumental / interlude style track, we gave Jesse the reins over the structure once we recorded our specific parts.

– How was the artwork created?

The artwork was made through digital imaging in Photoshop which was then ran through a cyanotype printing process to get a balance of digital forms but analogue imperfections. Abstract geometric graphics were printed onto acetate sheets to create the prints which were them scanned back in to be recoloured/sharpened.

A lot of the music has quite a dense atmosphere surrounding it that still feels quite tactile, and this is what we hope communicates in tandem with the visuals like the album covers and live audio reactive visuals.

– How have you found navigating releasing music as a independent artist? Where have you found support and encouragement?

Obviously, it’s tough. I think we’re all aware that it can be hard to get a big response from self released music. Despite this, the reception of The Realm (the previous single from EP) was really positive and it made us really excited to release the rest of the EP. It’s also encouraged us to get on with recording more music which we’re in the process of arranging a timeline for now.

– Are there any Leeds artists that you’d recommend people should check out?

For sure, the Leeds music scene is really exciting at the moment. There’s almost too many to mention without feeling like we’re leaving people out. But a night I look back to was our first gig as a band in Leeds when we played with party time the futureSound event. We played with Dandelion who more recently have started playing some awesome gigs, really excited to hear they’re releases and Contrail who have been killing it this year with an amazing single & a really tight set. Would check them out for sure

It’s also really great to see some local acts from the scene getting some serious traction like Adult DVD and Fuzz Lightyear. It’s great seeing your pals play at festivals to big crowds! There’s loads of great bands at the moment though and the scene is really supportive so it feels like a great place to be.

– What can fans expect to see from your upcoming headline? How are you preparing for one of your biggest shows to date?

The headline show comes at the end of our dates in the UK, which have just felt like they kept improving with each performance. It’s been really fun and it’s given us time to really develop our live set. As far as new things to expect we’ve got an audio-reactive visual light show which is really cool that Connor has been working on. We’ve been able to test this out in some of the other gigs when it’s been possible but we really want to showcase this in Leeds. Also we’ve got a couple more tracks that we’ve been working on and the headline slot gives us a bit more time to show these off so we’re really excited to share them. I think we can all collectively agree this is the show we’ve been most excited for yet.

– Anything else you’d like to add?

This autumn has just been really exciting for us with Wedgy. We’ve had some well received releases & live shows. It feels like we’re building some exciting momentum, so it’s exciting to wrap this up for the year with a great headline set & EP release,  then start planning how we’re going to push on in 2026.
