Summertime return with the release of The 20’s after last year’s debut, My Strange Addiction.
Described by the band as “pop soul” and pulling influences from jazz and RnB – The 20’s still feels like something greater than that to me, a true testament to the group’s abilities. Opening the song with George and Connie on keys and vocals respectively, you hear the beginnings of a warm and heartfelt soul song. Just as you settle in to the music, in comes the bass and guitar.
Reminiscent of Japan’s city pop scene, the bass bounces along to the rhythmic scats of the guitar. From this moment, you can’t help but be locked into the groove. Instrumentally, every member showcases their incredible ability, never taking the spotlight but sharing it in harmonious bliss.
The 20’s then takes a darker tone as guitar and keys enter battle with each other. Trading solos as the song falls apart around them. It’s a harsh yet beautiful reminder of the song’s true meaning. The loneliness of love.
The solos lead back to the final chorus before an abrupt end, putting a decisive full stop on the magic that Summertime have just unfolded in-front of you. It leaves you wanting even more, and with a group that only formed in 2025, I think there’s plenty more on the horizon.
The group take to Oporto on Tuesday 27th January supporting Hannah Rowe alongside Glass Frogs, an event fittingly titled “Soul Of The City”. We’ll be there, will you?
