REVIEW: COAL MOB – WHAT DO YOU THINK I SAID?

Impactful from the get go, What Do You Think I Said emulates Coal Mob’s post punk energy in the constant frenzy of the song’s delivery.

Based in Yorkshire, the band has been causing musical whirlwinds since 2022, modifying the danceable aggression of punk with a heavier edge. Having played in venues such as Hyde Park Book Club and Brudenell Social Club, Coal Mob is returning with a new single, bringing their lightning energy to 2026. Built for the moshpit, this song’s immediate catchiness will have their audiences moving with electricity.

After the momentous opening guitar chord, establishing its presence in its emphasised grit, the band instantly kicks off into their high impact groove, as distant shouts scream the song’s title at us. A dissonant guitar, the fast paced vocal delivery, growing synths – the excitement in this tune is built up from the very start.

The song layers instrumentation with a punk chaotic flare; as sections flow into each other, they unveil new textures. The guitar’s arpeggiated distortion turns into offbeat jagged chords, the pounding drums mutate into intricate tiptoeing grooves, and the vocals deliver a mix of rebellious ruthlessness and punky satire.
The underpinning reminder of the title in the backing vocals’ ad libs has a protesting quality, as they belligerently question the listener with each repeat.

In the final section’s climax, the tasteful chaos becomes pure angsty power, ending the track with head banging energy.
