The debut release from Leeds-based art prog artist Hetsi Harpur, “Cotton Baby Blue” is a marvel in breathtaking vocal work, emotional distinction and crisp quality. The fragile progression of the track is indicative of the journey of emotions her music will take you, created through tender, padded soundscapes and expansive melodies.
The track opens with a warm swarm of bells, closely followed by an introductory piano performance backed with faint, delicately guided crash cymbals. From the beginning, the song creates this feeling of real-life tension, the musicians working seamlessly to lead in Hetsi’s vocal line. This entire opening section of the song is comparable to the works of Susanne Sundfør, with this natural, folk-esque chemistry between the band being reminiscent of songs like ‘Undercover’ and ‘Darlings’.
As the songs intensity builds primarily through Hetsi’s lead vocal and piano, the tension is released with the drop of bass and drums. This satisfying change in energy feeds straight into the ethereal vocal melody, which dances around the groove. In reference to the songs subject, Hetsi explains the tracks attachment to when “you’ve been keeping it all together for so long trying everything to make it work till it has taken everything from
you, but you still keep trying to give, like screaming into a void”. This feeling is comparable to the sometimes moody, frustrated atmosphere in the songs highest moments.
Following the flute solo (standing out as radiant in the second half of the song), the track hits its emotional climax – the entire section is grandiosely ambient, every instrument enveloping to create a vast soundscape. This could be stylistically paired with the works of artist Weyes Blood, with its cinematic feel and art-pop influence.
Time will tell what new music comes from Leeds’ upcoming singer Hetsi Harpur. Based off this release, I can only imagine what future gems are in store for her supporters.
